Gabriola Island
March 1st 2022

We went for a lovely day trip to Gabriola Island today. It’s a 20min ferry ride from Nanaimo Harbor aboard the MV Quinsam with beautiful views of the surrounding islands and Nanaimo.

We found some beautiful beaches and walks at Gabriola Sands Provincial Park, Drumberg Provincial Park and Sandwall Provincial Park that Cielo loved exploring. We got extremally lucky with the weather as the sun would poke out as soon as we arrived at our destinations and the rain would immediately start pounding down as soon as we were ready to leave. We explored the island’s small town with many boutique shops and we picked up a couple of shirts at the rather large local hardware store celebrating the MV Quinsam who has served the local community since she was launched in 1982. Later this year in May she’ll be replaced after 40 years in service by two brand new hybrid electric Island class ships that will double the number of sailings on this busy commuter island route.

We also explored the local Nesters Market which seemed more like a Buylow Foods. They had a woodfire pizza place, a coffee shop that was closed by the time we arrived around 3 with no hours of operations listed and a lovely place called Robert’s Place. We ended up getting take out and they had a verity of cuisines to offer from Greek, Mexican, American and even some Asian themed dishes. The food at Robert’s was much better than expected and we ate it on the ferry ride back. We were very fortunate to show up at the terminal in between scheduled sailings and find our ferry waiting as it was very far behind schedule.

Overall it was a lovely day.
